Shane Black Returns With Prime Video’s Heist Thriller Play Dirty

Prime Video has dropped the first trailer for Play Dirty, marking Shane Black’s return to directing since 2018. The star-studded crime thriller adapts Donald E. Westlake’s legendary “Parker” novels into a high-stakes heist for a new generation.
The upcoming film Play Dirty premieres October 1, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video through Amazon MGM Studios. Directed by Shane Black, the movie adapts the classic “Parker” series by Donald E. Westlake, who wrote under the pseudonym Richard Stark. The trailer teases a gritty, action-packed tone that blends Black’s signature mix of sharp dialogue and explosive set pieces.
Mark Wahlberg takes the lead as Parker, a professional thief navigating dangerous waters when a planned score collides with the New York mob. Joining him is LaKeith Stanfield as Grofield and Rosa Salazar as Zen, alongside Keegan-Michael Key, Chukwudi Iwuji, Nat Wolff, Thomas Jane, and Tony Shalhoub. The ensemble cast underscores Prime Video’s push to elevate its original film slate.
The plot centers on a daring recovery of a billion-dollar sunken treasure, setting the stage for betrayal, shifting loyalties, and high-octane action. The film isn’t a direct translation of one book but rather a reimagining that pulls from across the Parker series, introducing fresh twists for longtime fans while keeping the spirit of the source intact.
Robert Downey Jr., originally attached to star as Parker, shifted into the role of executive producer. Along with Susan Downey and Team Downey, his involvement adds Hollywood heft to the production. The project reunites Downey with Shane Black after their collaborations on Iron Man 3 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, fueling anticipation for sharp storytelling and genre-bending energy.
Shane Black co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi, continuing his tradition of infusing crime thrillers with humor and biting realism. Filming took place across iconic Australian locations including Sydney Harbour, Ku-ring-gai Council, and the Hills District, adding a distinct international flavor to the caper.
This won’t be the first time Parker has been brought to the screen. Previous incarnations include Lee Marvin in Point Blank (1967), Mel Gibson in Payback (1999), and Jason Statham in Parker (2013). With Wahlberg stepping into the role, Play Dirty positions itself as the next definitive take on the notorious anti-hero.
The official video, titled Play Dirty – Official Trailer | Prime Video, highlights rapid-fire action, razor-sharp dialogue, and a darker take on the heist genre. Fans of crime thrillers and modern action films will likely see this as one of Prime Video’s most ambitious releases of the year.
