New on the Big Screen: August 2025 Releases

August 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most stacked months in recent cinema, with high-profile horror, nostalgia-driven sequels, and genre-bending originals hitting theaters.

Warner Bros. leads the charge with Weapons, the much-hyped horror-mystery from Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger. Premiering at the El Capitan Theatre before its wide release on August 8, the $38 million film trades “elevated horror” for an unsettling, multi-threaded story set in small-town Maybrook, Pennsylvania, where a string of disappearances always occurs at precisely 2:17 a.m. Critics are already calling it one of the year’s boldest genre films.

Disney is doubling down on nostalgia with Freakier Friday (August 8), reuniting Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan for another body-swap comedy. This time, the chaos escalates into a four-way swap involving Anna’s daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and her soon-to-be stepsister Lily (Sophia Hammons). Two decades after the 2003 original, the sequel aims to charm both returning fans and a new generation.

Comedy and action fans also have plenty to look forward to. August 1 brought The Naked Gun reboot with Liam Neeson and animated caper The Bad Guys 2 from DreamWorks. On August 15, Bob Odenkirk returns in Nobody 2, promising more high-octane fight sequences and deeper world-building.

For cinephiles seeking something different, Honey Don’t! (from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke) offers dark comedy noir, while Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing (August 29) brings a crime thriller twist starring Bad Bunny. Also on August 29, Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman headline The Roses, a fresh take on The War of the Roses.

Beyond theaters, August is busy for streaming and special events. Highlights include Outlander: Blood of My Blood (Starz, August 8), Hulu’s Alien: Earth (August 12), and Peacemaker Season 2 (HBO Max, August 21). Fans can also revisit Black Swan in IMAX for its 15th anniversary on August 21 and 24.
