Amanda Knox Reclaims Her Story in Hulu’s ‘The Twisted Tale’

After years of media scrutiny and legal turmoil, Amanda Knox breaks her silence in a new Hulu limited series that reframes one of the most infamous murder cases of the 21st century.
Hulu is turning up the volume on one of the most polarizing true-crime sagas of the past two decades with The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, premiering August 20. Co-produced by Amanda Knox herself and Monica Lewinsky, the 8-part limited series offers an unflinching look at Knox’s long fight to clear her name after being convicted, and later exonerated, for the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy.
The series stars Grace Van Patten as Amanda Knox and was created by K.J. Steinberg, known for his work on This Is Us. It promises to move past tabloid headlines and courtroom drama to reveal Knox’s side of the story. “I’ve been defined by something I didn’t do,” Knox says in the trailer, titled The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox – Official Trailer. The show aims to humanize a woman many remember only as “Foxy Knoxy.”
The case attracted intense international attention due to its brutal nature, conflicting evidence, and the involvement of multiple nationalities. Amanda Knox, then a University of Washington student, and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were initially convicted alongside Rudy Guede, who was later confirmed as the sole murderer by Italy’s highest court. Knox spent nearly four years in Italian prison before her final acquittal in 2015.
The media frenzy surrounding the case is a key focus. British tabloids painted Knox as a femme fatale, while American outlets portrayed her as a victim of a broken legal system. Nick Pisa, the reporter who helped popularize the nickname “Foxy Knoxy,” appears in the series, adding another layer to the narrative about journalism’s impact on justice.
While the series centers on Knox, it does not ignore the tragedy at its heart: the murder of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher, a University of Leeds student. Kercher’s family has long expressed discomfort with media retellings of the case, and the series is expected to navigate this tension carefully, particularly through portrayals of the Kerchers’ legal team and reactions.
Adding further emotional depth, Sharon Horgan plays Knox’s mother, capturing the pain of a family caught in an international legal storm. The show also features performances by John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, and Roberta Mattei. With new episodes released weekly on Hulu and Disney+ (UK) through October 1, the series unfolds slowly, mirroring the 15-year ordeal Knox endured.
Whether viewed as a justice-seeking survivor or a controversial figure, Amanda Knox’s return to the spotlight via this high-profile series is sure to reignite debate and scrutiny. Yet this time, she’s telling the story on her terms.
