Netflix Unveils Horror-Nature Hybrid “Nightmares of Nature”
A chilling new documentary series blends horror with wildlife storytelling, narrated by Maya Hawke and produced by Blumhouse Television and Plimsoll Productions.
“Nightmares of Nature” is set to premiere on Netflix this fall, marking an unusual but captivating crossover between horror cinema and natural history filmmaking. Produced by Blumhouse Television and Plimsoll Productions, the series is narrated by Stranger Things star Maya Hawke and reframes the wild as a theater of fear. Its first season arrives September 30, 2025, followed by a second season in October.
The project has been described as “nature’s darkest tales told through the eyes of its most vulnerable creatures.” Season 1, titled Cabin in the Woods, is set in New England and introduces viewers to the survival struggles of animals like a mother mouse and a young raccoon. Season 2, Lost in the Jungle, travels to Costa Rica and follows the perilous journeys of creatures including a frog, iguana hatchling, opossum, and even a jumping spider.
Maya Hawke’s narration is designed to add an eerie edge, drawing on her genre experience to heighten tension. Known for Stranger Things and Inside Out 2, Hawke now lends her voice to a concept that promises to unsettle while educating. Her involvement gives the project mainstream appeal, ensuring that fans of both horror and wildlife documentaries will tune in.
Behind the camera, the series carries serious weight. Blumhouse Television, the studio behind The Purge and Insidious, brings its horror pedigree, while Plimsoll Productions contributes decades of natural history expertise. The executive team includes Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, and Gretchen Palek for Blumhouse, alongside Grant Mansfield, Alan Eyres, Tom Hugh-Jones, and others for Plimsoll.
Each season of “Nightmares of Nature” will consist of three episodes, with a runtime of approximately 45 minutes per episode. Netflix has scheduled Season 1 for September 30, 2025, and Season 2 for October 28, 2025. The streaming giant is betting that this genre mashup can attract a wide audience looking for something different from traditional nature series.
The tagline, “Terror is a force of nature,” sums up the ambition: to reveal the animal kingdom’s inherent dangers with a horror-style twist.
