Billy Joel Documentary “And So It Goes” Hits HBO in Two-Part Event

The Piano Man’s life takes center stage in a revealing HBO Original documentary, chronicling his musical legacy, inner battles, and private world like never before.

HBO Max is set to debut Billy Joel: And So It Goes, a powerful two-part documentary offering an unprecedented look at one of America’s most iconic musicians. Directed by Emmy® winners Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, the documentary goes beyond the stage persona to reveal the man behind the music, exploring the triumphs, heartbreaks, and hidden wounds that shaped Billy Joel’s artistry.

Premiering at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival on June 4, the film will make its streaming debut in two parts, Part One arrives July 18 and Part Two follows on July 25, both airing from 8:00 to 10:24 p.m. ET/PT. Drawing from never-before-seen footage, rare performances, family archives, and personal interviews, the series offers intimate insights into Joel’s early years, struggles with fame, and complex personal life.

The documentary features appearances by musical giants like Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, alongside family and collaborators who helped shape Joel’s six-decade career. It also touches on defining relationships, including with model Christie Brinkley, and tracks his evolution from bands like The Hassles and Attila to global solo stardom.

The title track, “And So It Goes,” from Joel’s 1989 Storm Front album, serves as the emotional anchor of the series, capturing his vulnerability and storytelling prowess. Viewers can expect deep dives into legendary hits like “Piano Man,” “Uptown Girl,” and “We Didn’t Start The Fire,” while also confronting the darker corners of Joel’s life, including financial struggles, childhood trauma, and a recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Despite missing the Tribeca premiere due to health concerns, Joel’s presence is deeply felt throughout. With over 160 million records sold, six Grammy wins, and 33 Top 40 hits, his musical legacy remains indelible. The documentary also revisits milestones such as his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction by Ray Charles and his record-setting residency at Madison Square Garden.

By blending candid reflection with cultural commentary, And So It Goes doesn’t just celebrate Joel’s past, it reframes it for a new generation. It’s a must-watch for fans and newcomers alike, placing Joel’s story alongside other standout HBO music documentaries.
