The Lion King Turns 30: Disney Celebrates a Legacy That Still Roars

Three decades after its debut, The Lion King remains a cultural force, on screen, on stage, and soon in theaters again with a new prequel.

Walt Disney Studios is celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Lion King, the beloved 1994 animated classic that redefined family entertainment. As part of the festivities, the company has launched new merchandise, planned commemorative events, and previewed its next chapter: Mufasa: The Lion King, directed by Barry Jenkins and scheduled for release in June 2025.

Originally released on June 15, 1994, in the United States, The Lion King became an instant sensation. With a global box office gross nearing $1 billion, the film captivated audiences through its compelling story, unforgettable characters, and iconic music by Elton John, Tim Rice, and Hans Zimmer. It went on to influence generations of fans and creators alike.

Beyond its cinematic success, The Lion King evolved into a global theatrical phenomenon. The Broadway adaptation, directed by Julie Taymor, debuted in 1997 and has since surpassed 8,000 performances. With six Tony Awards and more than 29 productions in 24 countries, it remains the highest-grossing entertainment title in box office history.

Disney’s 30th anniversary celebration also includes limited-edition apparel, puzzles, and collectibles, available at Disney Parks and through select retail partners. The company is further honoring the milestone with a North American touring production of the Broadway musical, which will visit cities including Dallas, Atlanta, and Portland throughout 2025.

Looking ahead, Mufasa: The Lion King aims to expand the story’s mythology. Helmed by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins, the prequel explores the origin story of Mufasa, deepening the lore for longtime fans and new audiences alike. The film is expected to play a central role in keeping the franchise vibrant for future generations.

The original cast, Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, and Moira Kelly, brought emotional depth to characters that have become household names. Combined with the film’s groundbreaking animation and African-inspired score by Lebo M, The Lion King helped usher in a new golden era for Disney.
